A prototype game leverages a simple market model to depict the transition from workshop to factory.

Just play around with toggles in the "conditions" window and press start or step to run the simulation. Then sit and see what would happen :> I hope this will give some insight into the dynamics characteristic of this interesting age.

Notes:

  • Standard of Living = Price of Workhour / Price of Textile. It's somewhat related to the actual SoL but not the same.
  • Tooltips are very helpful to the time-series figure but were not added to the game due to time constraints, I may add them after the evaluation.
    • Prod. of WS & FT: Production of Workshop and Factory
    • Prod of FA &WK: Production of Farm and Worker
    • Prod of Textile: Production of Textile (Sum of Prod. of WS. & FT)
    • Price of Co, Wo, Te: Price of Cotton, Workhour, and Textile
  • The parameters and effects of "Conditions" are set randomly without any econometric evidence.
    • Cotton Plantation: Farm Supply +
    • Overseas Trade / Colonies: Textile Demand +
    • Enclosure: Worker Supply +
    • Mass Population: Textile Demand, Worker, Farm Supply +
    • Mass Investment: Workshop "scale" +, Factory "scale" ++
    • Flying Shuttle: Work / Factory Supply +, workhour demand -
    • Spinning Jenny: Work / Factory Supply +, workhour demand -
    • Water Frame: Factory Supply +, workhour demand -
    • Steam Powered Mill: Factory Supply +, workhour deman -
